This toy will take you about 5 minutes to make. Take the paper towel roll when it's empty (or the toilet paper roll for small dogs) and fill it up with a couple of small doggie treats. Seal both ends with some masking tape. Shake it in front of your dog and watch him go crazy when you give it to him. They will be able to smell the treats with their keen sense of smell. You may want to make two or three of them at a time if you have a destructive dog. They will have so much fun with it. You can use your imagination with whatever you want to put in the toy. Your dog will love it! Cost: Free

Frisbee Rope

I'm sure you have noticed how the hard plastic in a Frisbee is very hard on your dog's mouth so you should make a Frisbee out of a softer material but yet still strong. The pet stores will charge you over $10 for a good cotton rope, but you can get one for less than $2. Make a trip to the hardware store and buy a foot (more or less) of thick braided cotton rope. When you get it home, sew the two ends together with some heavy stitches. You can do this by hand...yes, you can. You now have a Frisbee Rope and your dog will love it. Cost: Around $2

Tug of War

Another way you can use the rope you bought from the hardware store is to tie both ends of the rope and play "Tug of War." What dog doesn't love to do that? Again, the pet store charges too much money for something so simple. Your dog certainly doesn't care where it came from. This rope is very good for strengthening their jaw muscles not to mention how much fun they will have playing with you. Cost: Around $2

Mr. Sock

There are a few variations of using this toy, but these two are the most popular:

Take a new sweat sock and put a tennis ball into it. You can draw a funny face on it if you want and then put a knot in the sock to hold the ball in place. You can only imagine how much fun your dog can have with this. They will love throwing that sock around and chasing it when it bounces. This is a good game of fetch, too. Cost: Around $2

Next, take another new sweat sock, draw a funny face on it and stuff your hand inside. Use it as a hand puppet by talking and gently nipping at your dog's ears and nose. They might be confused at first, but will catch on real fast. Always use a new sock because it will make them seem different from the ones you wear. If they don't have your scent and there's a face drawn on them, they won't look like the ones you wear around the house. Cost: Around $2

The Shell Game

Use three plastic cups (make sure they're not clear) and a dog treat for this game. Turn the cups upside down and put the treat under one of them. Keep switching the cups around really fast so it confuses your dog. Once you stop, make your dog pick which cup the treat is under. Trust me, your dog will always win and will have lots of fun doing so. Cost: Free

Smash the Pinata

This game is a lot like the one humans play. Take a brown paper bag, draw a traditional piñata design on it and fill it with some doggie treats. Then attach it to a pole with a rope on the end and swing it in front of your dog. This is great exercise due to all the jumping your dog will do. They will love it! Cost: Free

Swing the Plastic Bottle

Things you'll need: Empty plastic bottle (any size); a straw; knitting needle

Punch holes on each side of your plastic bottle.

Run your straw through the holes and then put your knitting needle through the straw. It should be able to swing so you will need the knitting needle longer than the straw.

You should be able to have both hands on each side of the knitting needle that is holding up the bottle. Make sure the holes are about a quarter of the way down the bottle, which will keep your bottle from becoming too top heavy. Put a treat inside the bottle, hold your hand on each side of it and have your dog swing the bottle until the treat falls out of the open top. This will keep them entertained for a long time. Cost: Around $3

A piece of thick wire made of steel to make a heart shape.

Creating the Perfect Fruit Tray With Dip Recipes

Creating the perfect fruit tray is really easy. All you need is a round serving platter, a dip container and some fruit serving tongs.

When preparing your serving platter, make sure its clean and dry. I like to line my serving platter with some fresh lettuce leaves so that it looks presentable.

Your next step will be to wash all of your fresh fruits and pat them dry.

Whole Fruits: Strawberries, Blueberries, Red Grapes, Green Grapes and Cherries.
Sliced Fruits: Bananas, Pineapple, Kiwi, Red and Yellow Apples, Cantaloupe, Honeydew and Watermelon
Tip: soak banana and apple slices in a little lemon or pineapple juice for 3-5 minutes to prevent them from browning.

You will want to lay your fruits onto your serving platter in sections, leaving the center area open for the dip container. Try to keep fruit juice to a minimum.

For Garnishing, I like to use bright red cherries.

Keep your fruit tray covered and chilled until serving time. The above list of fruits is just to give you an idea of what you can use on your tray, you don't have to use all of them.

Here are some great dip recipes to make and use with your fruit tray.

Marshmallow Cream Cheese Dip
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
7 oz. marshmallow creme

Blend together both ingredients in a small bowl. Chill for 1 hour before serving.

Strawberry Dip
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 jar of marshmallow creme
2 Tsp. strawberry juice (optional)

Whip cream cheese; add in strawberry juice and marshmallow creme. Beat until smooth. Chill for 1 hour before serving.

Maple Dip
1 pkg. (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1/2 c. sour cream
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. brown sugar, packed
1-2 tbsp. maple syrup

In a small mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, sugars and syrup; beat until smooth. Chill for 2 hours before serving.

Most people buy their Christmas gifts to give to others but in my opinion; handmade gifts from loved ones are the most valuable to possess. Before you even think of buying from shopping malls, think of some creative Christmas craft ideas, so that you can personally handmade some special Christmas gifts for the special ones this Christmas.

One of the common and wonderful Christmas crafts are ornaments. Ornaments are perfect gifts as they can have many uses, like hanging on Christmas trees, placing on office tables, hanging on mobile phones or giving as items in party goody bags. A simple ornament can be made by just cutting out an animal shape from a felt or any unwanted cardboard, glued with big buttons as eyes and a bead as the nose. You can create any animal figures you love, using any colour you like. You could be very proud of these self-made cute and creative Christmas crafts.

Reindeer candy jar can also be a prefect Christmas craft idea. Look around in your house for any empty jar. Make sure you wash it clean. Find any brown felt or wrapping paper to wrap the jar up. Next, fix black buttons as the eyes, big red bead as the nose and curvy twigs as the antlers with glue. You may like to decorate the mouth with black marker. After ensuring that the glue is dry, let your kids fill the reindeer candy jar with all their favorite candies or cookies and there you go, a simple and nicely decorated Christmas craft.

For those who like to count down to Christmas day, Advent calendars can be creative Christmas crafts to provide an enjoyable way to do so. A simple way of making an Advent calendar is to get either a thick cardboard or construction paper and draw 25 boxes on it. You can decorate the border of the calendar with pure white cotton wool to create the feel of Christmas. Draw or print out pictures from computer of Santa Claus face, reindeer or snowman and cut them out. These cut out shapes are for you to stick on the 25 boxes. You would have to stick one cut out shape on one box per day. As such, you would need at least 25 cut out shapes. Start sticking a shape from the 1st of December and once you have completed sticking all the 25 boxes, it will be Christmas.

Another great idea is that you can make environmental friendly Christmas crafts by using last year's used Christmas greeting cards, Christmas wrapping papers, tinsel or little paper ornaments which you have to cut them out so as to glue them on small jars. Next, cut out a circle shape from any cardboard and punch a hole big enough to hold a candle in the centre. Stick the cut out circle shape on top of a small jar with sticky tape. There you go; you would have nicely decorated candleholders for Christmas.

2.Christmas Wreath

Cut out the center of a white paper plate and paint the outer part of the plate green. Glue trios of Cheerios cereal to the wreath. When the glue is dry, dip a paint brush in red paint and dab over the cheerios so they resemble holly berries. Glue on a gift bow to the bottom of the wreath.

3.Milk carton Gingerbread Houses

Supplies Needed:
White icing(store bought or a recipe)
empty, clean 2L milk cartons
graham cracker squares
decorations:a variety of candies, sprinkles, etc.

Have all of your decorations, candies etc. in individual bowls. Prepare white icing/frosting if you are not using store bought.

Cut your milk carton in half width-wise and staple the tops closed. Cut each milk carton to make one or two doors. Secure the milk carton with the white icing onto a paper plate or a sheet of wax paper on top of cardboard. Attach graham cracker squares to sides of milk carton by spreading icing on milk carton and pressing cracker firmly onto carton. Do the same for the roof. For the area between the sides and roof, cut a graham cracker in half on the diagonal to form a triangle and attach the same way.
Once you have your sides and roof attached, use icing to attach decorations and candies to your house.

I buy a pretty, inexpensive gift box from a dollar store, line it with white tissue paper and nestle the soaps inside. Then I cover them up with more tissue paper, place the lid on top and carefully wrap it with attractive Christmas paper. Then I attach a charming (and charmingly cheap) bow on top and a cute gift tag.

If you’re stuck for ideas on what kind of Christmas themed soap to make, you can always check out Lush off or online. They have a wonderful array of Christmas themed soaps and bath bombs (they have all kinds of soaps all year round) that might inspire you. How To Make A Candy Cane Christmas Bouquet

Wow! I can't believe it.

It's almost Christmas time again! Every year it seems to get here quicker and quicker!

This Christmas I decided to make some Christmas themed bouquets to surprise friends and family who will see us over the holiday period.

This candy cane bouquet looks great, and doesn't take long to make. It's can also be a fun and simple project for children to make.

You will need:

50 mini candy canes
1 bunch of silk poinsettias
1 bunch of silk holly
Thick wire and some thin wire
Stem tape

Step 1: Wire and tape the poinsettias and holly...

Wire and tape all the poinsettias and holly onto the thin wires. Do not remove the leaves, as these will help add some more variety to the candy bouquet.

Step 2: Wire and tape the candy canes...

To wire the candy canes just place the wire against the candy cane then stem tape into place.

DON'T try to twist the wire around the candy cane as it will make the candy break!

Step 3: Start arranging the candy bouquet...

Take seven of the poinsettia flowers and hold them in one hand.

Now place five candy canes in-between the flowers. If you want to make the bouquet bigger use more flowers and candy canes in the middle of the bouquet.

Fan the flowers and candy canes out a little to give the bouquet more shape.

Step 4: Add the holly...

Place nine pieces of holly around the outside of the poinsettias.

Now take another seven candy canes and place them in-between the holly, making sure the candy canes can been seen in the middle and around the outside of the bouquet.

Step 5: Wire and tape the handle...

Trim your wires and then tape your handle.

Step 6: Add any extra items you desire...

You can add some extra items to add some variety if you wish.

Tinsel and little boxes wrapped to look like presents are very effective.

You could keep the red and white theme going by adding red and white ribbons on the outside of the holly.

Finally, to display the candy cane bouquet, just place it in a small vase on your table at Christmas time.

Just make sure you make a note of how many candy canes are in the bouquet because they may suddenly start to vanish!

This quick and easy bouquet will add that nice touch to any Christmas table.

Easy Christmas Cookie Recipes - One Recipe with Many Variations

There are so many Christmas cookie recipes around but often so little time to bake during the busy holiday season.

The solution? A great tasting basic cookie recipe that quickly and easily turns into such a variety of easy to make Christmas treats, friends and family will think you poured over all your favorite Christmas cookie recipes.

Let's start with the basics.

Basic Cookie Dough Recipe
1/2 cup (or 1 stick) butter (or margarine) at room temperature
1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the flour. Beat with an electric mixer, scraping the sides of the bowl several times, until the mixture is light and fluffy. With mixer at a low speed, add the flour gradually, beating just until everything is well blended.

Place the mixture on a baking sheet using a tablespoon measure and press down with a spoon to flatten a bit. Or roll our and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake at 350ºF for about 12 to 15 minutes, until golden.

This basic cookie mixture is also the base for the following cookie recipes (all baked in a preheated oven at 350ºF).

Orange Cookies
(Makes about 32)

Add 1 tablespoon of grated orange zest to the recipe. Shape into a log that is about 1 1/2" in diameter and refrigerate for 4 hours.

Slice dough into 1/4" thick slices. Place on cookie sheet. Cookies can be decorated with candies, rolled in colored sugar, or cut into pretty holiday shapes before baking. Bake in preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until lightly browned.

Cherry Coconut Chocolate Squares
(Makes about 54 squares)

In addition to the basic dough you will need:
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups flaked coconut
1/2 cup maraschino cherries, well drained and coarsely chopped

Line a 13"x9" baking pan with foil.

Stir cocoa powder into basic dough mixture. Press evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the crust looks dry.

In a medium bowl whisk together eggs, sugar, almond extract and baking powder until well blended. Stir in coconut and cherries. Pour over the baked crust.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, until top just begins to brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. Lift it out on to a cutting board using the foil ends and cut into 1 1/2" squares. Squares can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Coconut Pineapple Cookies
(Makes about 36)

In addition to the basic dough you will need:
1 1/2 cups sweetened flaked coconut
1/3 cup pineapple preserves (use raspberry or apricot if you prefer)

Add 1 cup of the flaked coconut to the basic dough mixture and mix well. Shape the dough into 1 1/2" balls and roll in the remaining coconut to coat them. Place the balls 1" apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Make a deep indentation in the center of each cookie with your fingertip.

Bake for 12-15 minutes until the cookie is firm and the coconut is lightly toasted. When cooled, fill each hole in the center of the cookies with the preserves.

You can vary this basic dough to make a wide variety of Christmas cookie recipes. Add other flavorings like maple, ginger or cinnamon. Add chopped dried fruits like apricots or dates. Or bake them plain in holiday shapes and decorate with colored icing.

One of the newest crazes in presents this year is dog gift baskets. It isn’t odd to see the little doggie stockings with treats in them around Christmas time, but lately dog lovers have found that giving these great gifts for pets is a fantastic way to let their little baby know they love them. Dog gift baskets usually consist of dog treats, a sweater, gourmet food, squeeze toys and a chew rope.

I decided to make my own for my sister-in-law’s dog, Tickles. Tickles is a female Pomeranian. My sister-in-law loves her dog so much that she has birthday parties for her. Yes, we wore party hats and sang happy birthday to her and had a cake for her. It was actually charming. I decided to send Tickles a home made basket for Christmas one year.

Dog gift baskets are very versatile so I decided to get creative with the project. I bought a wicker basket and put a pillow in it that I made. I found fabric that said “I love my mommy” on it. I then took a baby doll nightgown and cut the front open to the top panel. I sewed the edges so her feet were free. I also made an opening for her fluffy tail to curl up out of.

Then I took doggie treats with the soft center and poked a hole up through it. Red and green ribbons added a little color. I made 6 of these and put them in a sleepy time tea box. I then took booties that I found for a baby doll and a nightcap that I attached a ribbon to for her head.

The bedtime theme was just one of two dog gift baskets that I created for Tickles. The second was a great toy collection that any pup would adore. I bought several squeeze toys like a bear and rubber ducks. I added some chew sticks that I wrapped in ribbon and added tassels to the tops.

I found dog treats that resembled cookies and put them in a box and decorated it to look like tea cookies. I then took thin pieces of wicker and built a frame around one end of the dog gift baskets to form a cover.I used the same fabric from the pillow that I made and attached it to the frame.

Lace was then sewed into the fabric to give the presentation an extra special touch. I then took a thin piece of fabric and attached Velcro to it. I then put Velcro on the frame and draped the fabric over the entire basket. My sister in law and little Tickles loved the dog gift baskets that I made her.

Cookie Lover's Theme

This is a gift for anyone who loves sweets. It's a good idea for work associates and teachers as well as family and friends. A cookie jar, mixing bowl, or a basket are all nice containers. Line the container with a decorative towel, purchased shred, or tissue paper. Fill it with an assortment of cookies wrapped in small cello bags, purchased cookie mixes, chocolate chips, herbal tea, gourmet coffee, or envelopes of hot chocolate mix. One of my favorite wrapping papers come from purchased shopping gift bags. My local dollar store has hundreds of different designs for one dollar each. The paper used in these bags in heavier than purchased gift wrap and many of the papers have a shiny finish. Simply cut them into the size you need for wrapping your gift and don't forget to use the matching gift tag.

Ribbon, Bows, and More:
Coordinate the color and type of ribbon used with the gift wrapping. Raffia and twine are better for gifts that are not feminine in content. Satin, sheer organza, or grosgrain ribbon in patterns or solid colors are lovely for feminine gifts. Ribbon with wire on the sides is easier to tie in a structured-type of bow than ribbon without wire. Curly ribbon is always nice and the easiest to work with. You can combine several colors or add a fixed bow or allow extra curled ribbon to cascade onto the gift.

Embellishments or Decorative Items:
Adding small items is a great way to dress up your gifts as well as to tie in the theme of the gift. Choose a rattle or small toy for a baby gift. Add small white wedding bells to a bridal shower or wedding gift. Tie candy canes or small ornaments into the ribbon on Christmas gifts. Small toys, decorative cookie cutters, silk flowers, and any other small unbreakable items that can be tied with ribbon will be nice additions to complete your gifts.

Cello bags are inexpensive, keep your gifts dust free, and make gifts easy to transport. Soy Candle Making Tips

By Dave Krigger - A year ago, I never would have thought that I would be so involved in the soy wax candle making business. Just to type this article, I had to finish pouring soy wax into some jars, and wash the wax and scent from my hands. Trust me, soy wax is great, but not so great for keyboards.

I have learned a lot about candle making – shortcuts, dos, don’ts and other guidelines. Here are some tips for making soy candles that should help you get better results. Please note that each manufacturer of soy wax has different temperature requirements. All soy wax is NOT the same.

1 – Get all of your electronic devices – computers, iPods, etc out of the kitchen. Wax and electronics to not mix! Go ahead, do it now – I’ll wait.

2 - 1 pound of soy wax melts to 16 ounces of liquid wax. How many candles you make from a pound of wax will depend on the size of the jars you use.

3 - Measure how much your jars hold with water and write down the ounces on the bottom of the jar. This will help you plan how much wax you will need for a batch of candles. Make sure there is room at the top of your candle for any lids you may have for the jars.

4 - Melt your wax but don't let it heat above the suggested temperature. Overheating the wax may cause it to not set correctly – it may turn white, the top of the wax won’t be smooth, or it will sink slightly.

5 - Once the wax cools to the specified temperature, add your fragrance. Once your fragrance has been added you should stir the mixture often. Stir well before pouring your candles.

6 - Pour your candles when the wax cools to the suggested pouring temperature or once it starts changing consistency. You will notice that it will cloud up slightly.

7 - You can layer and marble your candles as well. If you layer your candles wait at least 15 minutes for the first layer to set before pouring the next layer. If you want a marble look pour the container ½ way with the first color and then wait a couple of minutes before pouring the second color. These times may vary depending on the wax you are using.

8 - Decorate your containers if you wish with labels, ribbon, stickers, craft paper, charms, or any other decorative items. Your candles can be as creative as you are.

Once again, all soy wax is not the same, so check the temperature recommendations from your manufacturer. Also, make sure that your wick is centered as much as possible before pouring. And, center the wick after pouring. As the candle burns, the melting area should progress toward the outside edges equally on all sides. This ensures that the candle will burn completely and evenly.

Now, if you will excuse me, I would like to see if my iPod still works after it took a dive into the pitcher of hot wax.

Candle making can be a fun activity and it can also be a fun and profitable business. Making candles is not a difficult process but there are a few things that you need to know and a few steps that you need to follow.

You can make candles simply by forming them by hand, or you can use candle molds, or you can use candle making kits.

The beauty about candle making is that you can correct any errors by simply melting down the wax and starting from scratch again.

Make sure that your working area is clean and free of dust, crumbs, and other things that could get stuck in your candle wax and ruin your new candle.

For easy cleanup, cover your working area with newspaper.

When you melt the wax do not walk away; always supervise the melting process. Never use a microwave to melt the wax because it to easily boils the wax instead of melting it.

It can be fun to involve your children with the process, but you have to be very careful and closely supervise them. Small children can be tempted to touch the hot wax and since the wax smells good they might even be tempted to eat it. Never leave the child alone near a wax container.

While the wax is melting also melt your color wax dye. Stand clear while the color wax dye is melting because you do not want to inhale the chemicals that are released during the melting process.

As soon as the wax is fully melted add your color wax dye to the liquid candle wax.

The next step is to pour the wax into your containers. Save a small quantity of wax, you will be using it later in the process.

Should you spill wax on yourself, use cold water to solidify the wax and then remove it. Never try to brush the hot wax from your skin.

Insert the wick and let the candles cool overnight.

The next day you will be using the wax that you saved to fill in any holes that formed in the candle during the cooling down period.

For decorating your candles you could use rubberstamps or stencils to make patterns on the candles.

You can also add flair to your candles by decorating them with flower petals, leaves, or herbs. For this you use a heated spoon to attach the petal or leaf to the candle.

By Cassie Morgan - Try making your own citronella candles and eliminate mosquitoes while providing a romantic, outdoor setting. Making citronella candles is easy and can cost as little as $0.25 per candle. Follow this step-by-step guide and make your own candles at home in less than 10 minutes:

Materials Needed:

Wax - Any form of all-purpose wax will do. This can be found in the canning section of the grocery store or in a craft or hardware store.

Citronella - You will need citronella oil for the candle to be effective against mosquitoes.

Mold - This is the container which you will be pouring the hot wax into. The container is your choice, if you want to get fancy you can but a recycled can or glass will also do.

Container for Melting Wax - Nothing specific, a saucepan filled with water or a coffee tin will do.

Wick - Your candle will not work without a wick. You can purchase wicks at any craft store or you can choose to do it yourself by dipping a string or cord into hot wax.

Thermometer - Any form of thermometer will do.

Releaser - Any form of cooking oil or silicone spray will do, as long as it does not have a petroleum base as it may release toxic fumes while burning.

Wooden Spoon - This will be used for stirring the wax.

Wick Cutter - A knife or a pair of scissors will do.

Directions:

Make the Wick - Soak a piece of heavy string or cord into wax and set to dry on a sheet of wax paper. You can also buy candle wicks instead of making them.

Heat the Wax - Heat your container to approximately 140 degrees and place unmelted wax into it.

Add Citronella - As the wax is melting add 1-2 drops of citronella.

Releaser - As the wax is melting; spray your releaser into your mold.

Stir - Stir the melting wax softly with your wooden spoon.

Pour - Pour the wax into the mold and remember not to fill it to the top. Leave about one inch at the top of the mold.

Wicks - Place the wicks into the melting wax. Hold wick in place either using your hand or tie it to a pencil in order to ensure the wick stays upright and does not fall over.

Set to dry.

Making citronella candles is as easy as 1-2-3! Be truly unique and buy terra-cotta pots, paint them and use them as one-of-a-kind candle holders!
